The Science Communication Institute is a small nonprofit with an ambitious mission: to improve how science is communicated, shared, understood, and used. Since 2011, SCI has developed and managed projects ranging from the 10-year Open Scholarship Initiative to today’s work on carbon dioxide removal, climate policy, disinformation, and other challenges where better communication and coordination can make a difference.
Much of this work begins before there is an obvious funding stream to support it. Contributions to SCI help us research new ideas, convene experts and institutions, develop projects, publish analysis, conduct outreach, and build the organizational infrastructure needed to turn promising ideas into sustained initiatives.
SCI’s work has been made possible by hundreds of people and organizations that have contributed funding, expertise, time, and institutional support over the years.
The Open Scholarship Initiative is a good example. During its 10-year run, OSI received support from UNESCO, foundations, scholarly publishers, universities, professional societies, consultants, conference participants, and individual donors. Their support allowed SCI to convene a genuinely global conversation about the future of scholarly communication, conduct research, publish reports and recommendations, and sustain this work over many years. We remain deeply grateful to everyone who helped make OSI possible.
